Avast ye! Our ship has sailed!!!

Last week Darren, Matt, a brother each, and Justin Bernhaut bought a sailboat named the "Interlude" on Craigslist.  She was built in 1967--older than all the owners save one, but her looks, charm and physique have them all beat!

For her maiden voyage from Mamaroneck, the only home she's ever had, we enlisted good friend and experienced Captain Sean Claffey to pilot her through the treacherous Hell's Gate, down the East River and out the Verrazzano Narrows to her new home in Shell Bank Creek just behind Jordan's Clam Bar in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn.

The 11 Hour Voyage brought them past places they didn't know existed, like South Brother Island, and past many familiar places but from a vantage they'd never seen--or in the case of the dense fog that welcomed them to Brooklyn, couldn't see.

Jamaica Bay is her home now and the sunset and early morning cruises in those friendly confines have already made Summer 07 more fun than should be legal. In fact, the fact that we're allowed to sail at all should probably NOT be legal!

Check out the video...

We suggest that you wait till August or September to accept an invite onboard.  Give the crew time to work on their skills and decide on her new name.  Right now the Passing Wind, the AAARGH!, and Fast Glass are the front runners.  Feel free to offer you suggestions in the comments below.

Gowan, free Willy!!

See for yourself, this here Whale swam into the Gowanus Canal last night.  Our Kevin Jordan got this shot on his way home from an all night high stakes poker match in the basement of Monte's Venetian Room.

A local was overheard saying, "A Whale in F'in Brooklyn...can you believe this shit!"   She'll only be there till tonight, so head over before the tide rolls in and takes her back to sea.  Leaving Brooklyn?  Fuggettaboudit!

Savoia on Smith - Not just for Pizza

ovenSavoia.jpg

Savoia is famous for premium pizza from an old-world oven. We brag to our borough-challenged friends that this is as close to Italy as you can get in pasta. But who knew they do brunch with the same flare.

Enter pasta with a sausage and eggplant ragu. The wait staff was visibly puzzled when we asked for Mimosas only affirming the authenticity.

Most appealing was the twist on Eggs Florentine with a Salumi called Speck (God, the pig has no limits of culinary delight) and Alfredo Sauce! Lovely.

Park Slope Dinner Party

Stylish and darling, a friend opened up her newly decorated duplex (yes, duplex) to pals for a dinner created by her chef friend (having chef friends is the bomb) purely for our pleasure. The Park Slope rental is so huge we have advised our friend, a Chicago transplant, that she must stay until she croaks, and said friend heartily agrees.

Having created all types of cuisine all over the US, Chef John Berglund, above is headed back to hometown Stockholm to revamp a hotel restaurant with family and make the food he believes in, simple, fresh and done right. When in Sweden look for Talliden, we have invited ourselves and will keep you posted.

Roasted lamb over greens and topped with parsnip chips, accompanied by parsnip au-gratin, perfect mashed potatoes and caramelized carrots---worthy of three helpings and we only stopped at three to keep from horrifying the other guests.

Holiday Shopping? --Hasker's

hasker03.jpg

Don't you love seeing the holiday decor already up on Halloween? It makes some of us reach for the xanax, especially when we think about those hard-to-shop-for butt-pains on our Holiday list. Hasker's Home on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens caught our eye for the variety and uniqueness of the offerings. Seen here, the lava lamp has grown up and gotten some style. Mathmos created the original and now offers one with a choice of gel inserts to change with your mood...baby. Groovy. See other 'Sleeper' type orbs and motion sensitive lighting do-dads here too.

Intensely scented and gorgeous candles (FYI for those of you shopping for Christa she loves pretty candles as long as they don't smell like food), silk sleeping masks (also a good Christa gift), throw pillows, art, furnishings, children's accessories, a boudoir of gifty things.

Even the dudes can be checked off the list with gizmos like this goofy ear light for the guy who still reads at night.

Roller Coaster of Death

coney_01.jpg

Just another Summer night heckling the single-A ball teams and the crowd of children around us. The Brooklyn Cyclones got creamed! And when they loose, the home crowd takes it out on the Mascots and the kids, (that's what they're for, right?). Dave Buttigieg, seen here harassing a 12-year old from the local Yeshiva.

Though we'd all gorged ourselves on Nathan's Famous, someone (Matt) thought it would be a good idea to squeeze our beer-bloated guts into some festively painted steel and have ourselves flung around at 80mph. Someone in fact thinks that trying to make one's friends throw up is a great way to spend an evening.

Coney Island Cyclone

The Cyclone, scary to look at, scarier to ride. The coaster is over 75 years old, made mostly of wood, visibly shakes, audibly creaks and if these facts don't strike fear in your hearts, take a gander at the carnies who maintain it and let me know if you still want to get on.
Coney Island Cyclone

Team Anyway seen here, screams muffled by the din of the groaning framework.

According to one source "1 in 150 million rides on a rollercoaster result in death and there are 900 million rides each year in USA." Nothing to be found on the Internet about Cyclone deaths (conspiracy) but plenty of Cyclone history to be had.

Think you are a Brooklyn tough-guy? Not till you ride the Cyclone.

Friday Night Lights: Go Clones

IMG_4599.jpg

A single-A ball game is a real New York slice of life. Take the Staten Island Ferry on a cool summer night, toast the Lady in the Harbor with a tall-can, stroll a few feet to the Staten island Yankee's Stadium, sit close enough to see the big league hopefuls' stubble, and watch our Brooklyn Cyclones crush them. (Go Clones!)

Our big group was drunk enough to apreciate the fried foods and cheap beer. It is a family outing, if your family is the Osbourne's

We felt our heckling was a sure way of showing love to our preferred boro's team, but what's a few cat-calls between friends anyway? (Congrats to Fred on being- um- the most articulate heckler in our group--suckass!!) Plans are underway to take our rude crew to see the re-match at Coney island - the Brooklyn Cyclone's Home - August 21 www.brooklyncyclones.com.

The view was spetacular, the breeze kind, the beer cold, the players skilled - and get this - they show fireworks after every Friday night game!

So take a free boat ride, park your NY rump in a comfy plastic chair, arrange your garments so you can air-out, raise a plastic glass, bite your dog and ask yourself the existential question - "Who's better than me? - NO-BAH-DEY!"

Cube 63 Sushi Rivals Osaka on Court

cubecounter.jpg

As Cobble Hill Brooklyn booms as a restaurant destination, the competition heats up. There are many sushi restaurants in the area between Atlantic and Third Place, Columbia and Smith. Osaka is the local favorite, except for the wait, which is why we stopped into the new Asian fishy lounge Cube 63, just up a block or two from our former favorite!

Check out the soft shell crab roll above! Everything is presented with a twirl of sweet and hot sauces, spicing up the usual suspects and making the little sushi sculptures edible works of art. We detected some locals settling right into being Cube's first-name-basis 'regulars' at the bar. There also seems to be a graden dinning area in the works.

This plate features the City Roll ($11.00) and a bit of sashimi.

The service is very sweet and the Sake list is a nice little adventure.

Being connoisseurs we were disappointed that some of our a-la-cart favorites were not available, but better fresh than sorry!
